Crime… and its Aftermath

GETTING SEARCHED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT: Lesson 2

“Do you mind if I search your car?”

  • A law enforcement officer can search your car if you give permission for the search.
    • If they ask your permission to search, you do NOT have to give permission.
    • If you do not give permission, be respectful about it.
  • Sometimes, a law enforcement officer might ask, “Do you mind if I search your car?”
    • If you say “yes,” meaning you DO mind and you do not want the car searched, the officer might believe you mean “yes,” – and you consent to the search.
    • If you say “no,” it will mean you do not mind – and you consent to the search.
    • If you do not want police to search the car, clearly say, “I do not give you permission to search my car,” or simply, “I don’t want you to search my car.”
