Crime… and its Aftermath

HATE CRIMES EXPLAINED: Lesson 1

Hate Crimes

  • A hate crime is threats, harassment, or physical harm motivated by the victim’s race, color, religion, national origin, ethnicity, sexual orientation or physical or mental disability.
  • If a court finds a crime was a hate crime, harsher penalties are imposed at conviction – this means longer jail time, longer probation, and higher fines.
  • Common hate crimes include harassment, threats, assault, criminal trespass, vandalism, criminal mischief and arson.
  • Others hate crimes involve vandalism that damages a church, synagogue, cemetery, mortuary, school, community center, city government building, courthouse, juvenile detention center, and so forth.
