MAKING A FALSE POLICE REPORT: Lesson 1

Reporting Someone to Police… Falsely

  • Reporting a crime you witness is a good thing.
  • Calling the police to report falsely that someone committed a crime is not good; a false police report is a crime, including filing a false report just to harass someone because you were just angry or indignant.
  • Filing a false report to the police is a felony in Tennessee: a possible sentence is between 2 and 12 years in prison, depending upon your criminal history.
  • Testifying in court and telling a lie as is also a felony (see above!)…
  • … AND you would put an innocent person at risk of being convicted of a crime he or she didn’t commit.
  • Filing a false report of a fire or other emergency is also a felony
