Crime… and its Aftermath

STATE AND FEDERAL LAWS: Lesson 1

State and Federal Criminal Laws

  • Tennessee has state laws and many cities and counties have ordinances that, if violated, are considered crimes.
    • These crimes are investigated by local law enforcement, and sorted out in State courts.
  • The federal government has its own law, law enforcement system, and court system.
  • Most federal crimes involve government agencies and are felonies – carrying sentences of more than a year in prison.
  • Federal courts handle state law violations that happen on federal property, like national parks or federal office buildings.
