Driving Laws Every Young Driver Must Know

The Point System: Lesson 2

The Effect of Points On Your License to Drive

  • Tennessee uses the point system to keep track of bad marks on driving records to:
    • Make sure that unsafe drivers do not continue to drive
    • Put some “sting” into traffic violations as an incentive for safer driving – not all people need this kind of incentive. If you do, pay attention.
    • If you gather enough points against your license, you will most likely lose it for a year. More details later.
  • Points against your license are also reported to your car insurance company.
    • Although the insurance companies operate their own point systems to decide how safe (or how dangerous!) a driver you are, having points against your license can cause the cost of your insurance to go up.
