How to Get Your License: Lesson 1

Getting a Driver’s License at 18 For the First Time

  • If you don’t already have a license at 18, you will apply for an unrestricted driver license at a Tennessee Department of Safety (DOS) office.
    • “Unrestricted” means you can drive any time of the day or night, with anyone you choose in the car.
    • The State of Tennessee website will give you complete info – including a study guide to help you prepare for the written and driving tests.
  • At minimum , you must have these things to get a driver’s license:
    • Two documents that prove where you live
    • Proof you have insurance on your car, or the car you’ll be driving
    • A passing score on the written test at the DOS office
    • A passing score on the vision test
  • Acceptable performance on the driving test
  • Payment of the license fee
