PREGNANCY AND HAVING CHILDREN: Lesson 1

Not Married, in Love… and We’re Pregnant

  • Married people are presumed to be parents of a child born during the marriage.
  • Paternity is established either by the dad’s admission that he is the baby’s father, or by DNA when parents are not married.
  • When a couple generates a child, you are both responsible for its support until your child turns 18 years old, or until the child’s high school class graduates if the child turns 19 as a senior in high school.
  • The duty to support lasts a LONG time – whether you live together as a family or not.
  • Under Tennessee law, both parents are equally and jointly responsible for their child’s health and welfare, education and support.
  • Both parents’ earnings and income from all sources are included when the court calculates child support payment amounts.
  • Either or both parents may be ordered to provide health insurance for the child.
