PREGNANCY AND HAVING CHILDREN: Lesson 2

Child Support is Expensive… and Persistent

  • Not paying child support is a serious issue for the person who should be paying – but more importantly, for the child who needs the support.
  • All states help each other enforce another state’s child support orders, so going to another state to avoid support orders won’t work.
  • In Tennessee, paychecks are automatically “attached” to collect support.
  • Income tax refunds can be intercepted to pay support.
  • Lottery winnings can be intercepted to pay support.
  • Enforcement is even tougher if the child had to go on welfare for support.
  • People who don’t pay support as ordered by the court in Tennessee can go to jail.
  • Child support amounts can be increased or reduced depending on income – but you have to ask the court to change it. Only the court can change the ordered amount.
  • YOU CAN LOSE YOUR LICENSE TO DRIVE AND/OR GO TO JAIL IF YOU DO NOT PAY CHILD SUPPORT.
