The Adoption Process: Continued

  • Step Three: Make the decision: get counseling, talk to the other parent if it is practical and safe, talk to an attorney who will later help in family court.
  • Step Four: Plan for the adoption: research adoption agencies, evaluate them using techniques like looking at their website and searching for reviews, contact them and ask lots of questions about the process, about different adoption types, and ask for references.
  • Step Five: Arrange the adoption: cooperate with the agency if you use one, give all the information you can – including information about the other parent
  • Step Six: Consent to the adoption: you can still change your mind. The adoptive parents’ home will be studied to be sure it is a suitable home for a child.
  • Step Seven: Finalize the adoption through the court. Your parental rights will have already ended (you stopped being parents legally) before this phase .
