SEXUAL ASSAULT, SEX OFFENDERS, AND YOUR RIGHTS: Lesson 2

Sexual Assault & Battery

  • Touching someone intimately without their consent could be sexual battery.
  • “Intimate” contact means intentional touching of intimate parts, or of the clothing covering the immediate area of a person’s intimate parts, for sexual arousal or gratification.
  • Helping someone to sexually batter someone is also sexual assault on the part of the helper.
  • Sexual assault or battery can happen even if the victim is clothed.
  • One common scenario of sexual assault and battery for women in their late teens or early twenties: DATE RAPE.
  • Date rape is a consensual encounter (a date) that turns into non-consensual sex (rape).
