THE LEGAL SIDE OF GETTING MARRIED: Lesson 1

NOW the Legal Stuff - Getting Married: The Marriage License

  • At 18, you can get married without consent from parents, but you will need a marriage license. Here’s how to get one in Tennessee:
  • Step one: you’ll need your birth certificate to prove your age, your Social Security Number, the city and state your parents were born in, driver license or other form of ID, and the application fee.
    • The license fee is probably $100, unless you take a 4-hour marriage prep course and save $60 from the license fee.
  • Step two: get an application online or from the county clerk’s office and find out when you can go there to complete the process.
  • Step three: Bride and groom go to the clerk’s office together to swear all the information on the application is true, pay the fee, and provide documents.
  • If either bride or groom are 16 or 17, the minor’s parents must attend to consent.
  • There is a waiting period of three days before you can use the license if either bride or groom is under 18.
  • The license must be used at a ceremony within 30 days – or start all over again.
