Some Common Internet Fraud Schemes To Watch Out For

  • Online crime costs an average of $3,000 per case reported. That includes:
  • $81 million taken by bad guys targeting people on online dating sites, pretending to love the victim and then asking for money. They get away with an average of more than $12,000 at a time!
  • Car sales scammers steal $51 million selling people cars that don’t exist. They steal an average of about $4,000 per victim.
  • Real estate scams tricked lots of vacationers out of $18 million by charging them for property that doesn’t exist. They take nearly $1,800 per victim. People show up for their vacation rental and are stuck on the street with their bags.
  • Scammers pretending to be FBI agents steal $6 million, intimidating people out of money. They get away with almost $700 per victim.
