How to Safeguard Your Identity: Lesson 5

Never Share Your Username or Password

  • This one is easy: don’t give your username or password to anyone.
  • You give a friend your username and password. It’s a friend, after all. Then you have a falling out. What if your former bestie logs on, pretends to be you, and then says something really awful?
  • How do you prove it wasn’t you? This is serious, and it happens everyday.
  • What if their post had something to do with hate, or violence, or threats, or pornography?
  • If someone else can use your username and password, they can post something that seems like it is from you – but it’s really you expelled from school, in hot water at home, or talking to police.
  • Your name and password “identify you” online. Don’t hand your identity to someone else, ever.
