How to Safeguard Your Identity: Lesson 6

Your Information Can Be Sold to Others

  • Every website has a “privacy policy.”
  • The site’s privacy policy tells you how the site uses all your personal information. Read the policy! If you didn’t read it, don’t agree to it. If you don’t understand it, don’t agree to it.
  • Some websites ignore their own privacy policy and sell your email address even if they said they wouldn’t. Here comes the spam email. Great!
  • If a website asks for lots of information about you, leave. Period. Would you give all that info to some stranger who just walked up to you and asked? Correct answer: NO.
  • Don’t give your birthdate, Social Security Number, account numbers, address, employer or school name, unless you absolutely trust the site.
