Tenants, Landlords, and Leases

UNDERSTANDING RENTAL AGREEMENTS: Lesson 8

What Do I Do if I Decide to Move?

  • The lease, if you have one, will tell you the earliest you can leave without paying a penalty
    • If you leave before the lease is up, you might be responsible for all the rent on the place until it is re-rented for at least what you were paying.
  • If you otherwise satisfied the terms of the lease, it will tell you how much notice you must give before you move.
  • If you have a month-to-month rental agreement, usually you must give a month’s notice before you move.
