Work & Paying Taxes

Understanding Your Rights: Lesson 1

Rights for Working People

Work and Paying Taxes: You say you just want to be an adult, live on your own? Go for it! Now you can work for the next 45 years …

Working people have a few rights on the job:

  • Most people can have breaks while at work.
  • Most working people can get overtime pay. Federal law says people get overtime pay if they work more than 40 hours in a week.
  • Most workers are covered for medical treatment and lost wages for on-the-job injuries by workers’ compensation insurance.
  • Many working people are covered by unemployment insurance and can get part of their earnings if they lose a job, and it is not their fault they lost the job.
  • Some states have a minimum wage law. Tennessee does not.
    • Tennessee’s minimum wage (the least you can make at work) is based on federal minimum wage law.
    • Federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. That is not enough to live on!

Stay in school. Go to college and/or learn a trade to INCREASE YOUR EARNING POTENTIAL.
